The Carriage Loft:

Situated off a quiet alleyway in the heart of Hamilton Ontario, is a unique carriage house, a well preserved monument to the days when carriages, with iron wheels clanging against cobblestone, whisked elaborately dressed ladies and top hatted gentlemen through the streets of the bustling city.

The proud, two story building boasts the original mansard roof and ornate features, echoing the Second Empire Victorian style of the mansion it once belonged to.  Inside, five carriage bays on the main floor, sunlight radiating through six foot tall windows, invite you to linger, but there is more.

Visitors are awed from their first sight of the carriage house looming in front of them as they round the bend in the alleyway.  But it is when they emerge at the top of the stairs to the Carriage Loft that air is sucked in and reverent whispers of ‘wow’! escape their lips.  At this point, they are no longer observers but time travellers.

The year is 1875.  Your clothes and language seem out of place in this expansive space, with original exposed beams stretching from the triple brick walls that support them, to an impressive, 11 ft high centre.  You look out the large window to a rugged, green lined lane, described only in romantic novels, and recognize the tack house you had barely noticed when you passed it earlier. Now you can imagine horses neighing, the hammering of horseshoes onto hooves, and wonder how many secret kisses were stolen behind it in the moonlight.

Bells from the nearby church that used to be background noise, now pierce your senses, and images of families strolling to Sunday school spring into mind.  Your heart has slowed, your shoulders have relaxed, and you wish you did not have to leave.  This is our home, and we invite you to share it with us.

Years of neglect had allowed this beautiful building to fall into disrepair, but inspired by its beauty, and guided by our respect for the past, we have brought it to life again. Our dream is to share it with a community that values its rich history and unique charm. That is why we wish to open its doors to you.

We envision a space that can serve this community in ways it could not have when it housed carriages for the wealthy.
